DINOv3: Patch Features & Similarity

A vision transformer trained without labels can still learn what a "wheel" is — just by looking at millions of images. Click any patch and watch every other patch in the image light up by similarity.

Self-supervision, in one paragraph

You take an image, make two augmented crops, and feed them through two networks: a student and a teacher. The teacher's weights are an exponential moving average of the student's. The loss says: "the student's output should match the teacher's output for the same image."

DINOv3's killer property: zero-shot dense correspondence. You can trace the same body part across two photos of different people. No fine-tuning, no labels.

This is a simulation — we generate synthetic patch features that cluster by region. Click any patch in the left image: the heatmap on the right shows cosine similarity to every other patch. Notice how patches on the same object glow together.

What the patches actually encode

You can use DINOv3 features as a drop-in replacement for hand-engineered descriptors (SIFT, ORB) in matching pipelines, often with significantly better robustness to lighting and viewpoint. The catch is compute — a forward pass per image costs more than the entire classical pipeline.
