Image Filters: Mean, Median, Gaussian

Smoothing is the first thing every vision pipeline does. Three classic kernels, three different philosophies. Toggle the filter, change the kernel size, and watch a noisy image clean up — pixel-by-pixel.

Three smoothers

Visualizer · noise → clean

Crank up the noise, then sweep through filters and kernel sizes. The right canvas is the filtered output; the small panel on the right shows the actual kernel weights being applied.

When to use which

A Gaussian kernel is separable — a 5×5 2D Gaussian is the same as a 1D 5-tap pass horizontally then vertically. That's an O(n²) → O(2n) speedup at any kernel size. Use it.
